When mental health and substance use travel together, treating them together is what makes recovery hold.
*Talk to someone who understands what you are facing.
Dual diagnosis treatment addresses a mental health condition and substance use at the same time. Anxiety and alcohol. Trauma and painkillers. Depression and burnout that quietly turned into something heavier. These rarely show up separately, and treating one while ignoring the other is one of the most common reasons people relapse.
Compass treats co-occurring conditions as one connected story, because that is how you actually live it. Your mental health and your substance use are part of the same system, and we build one plan that treats the whole thing.
A co-occurring disorder, also called dual diagnosis, is when a person has both a mental health condition and a substance use disorder at the same time. For example, someone with untreated trauma may drink to quiet the hypervigilance, or someone with depression may use stimulants to function.
When only one condition is treated, the other keeps pulling recovery off course. Integrated treatment closes that gap by addressing both together.
Your clinical team treats the mental health condition and the substance use at the same time, with one coordinated plan led by PhD-level clinicians. We combine evidence-based therapy with our recovery framework, group work, and brain-based tools.
We also bring in functional medicine, which often uncovers physical drivers, such as inflammation, hormone imbalance, blood sugar swings, or nutrient deficiencies, that quietly fuel cravings and mood instability. Treating those root causes makes both conditions easier to stabilize.
Depression or anxiety with alcohol or substance use
Trauma and PTSD with self-medication
Burnout and high-functioning substance use
Mood instability with disrupted sleep and nervous system dysregulation
Grief or loss with escalating use
When you only manage symptoms, the root cause stays in the driver’s seat. Compass digs into the biology, the psychology, and the story behind the struggle, so recovery has something solid to stand on. Treating both conditions together also reduces the whiplash of getting better in one area while sliding backward in another.
Co-occurring conditions are treated within our IOP and PHP programs. Clients who need more daily structure often start in PHP and step down to IOP as both conditions stabilize, then continue in aftercare. We do not provide medical detox, and if supervised withdrawal is needed first, we will help you arrange it.
Dual diagnosis means a person has both a mental health condition and a substance use disorder at the same time. Compass treats both together rather than separately.
Because they feed each other. Treating addiction while ignoring untreated trauma or depression, or the reverse, usually leads to relapse. Integrated care addresses the whole picture at once.
We commonly treat anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD, and burnout alongside substance use, in both our IOP and PHP programs.
Functional medicine identifies physical drivers like inflammation, hormone imbalance, and nutrient deficiencies that can fuel cravings and mood swings, so treating them supports both conditions.
