Most people who reach us have already tried something that did not hold. Here is what is actually different about this program.
Day one is mostly listening.
Your first session is a conversation, not an intake interview read off a form. We want the shape of what has been happening, including the parts you have not said to anyone yet.
You meet the whole team, not a coordinator.
Our Orange County team is small on purpose. By the end of your first week you know everyone by name and they know your plan.
The plan is built with you, not handed to you.
You will see it, question it, and change it. Anything we recommend gets explained, including why.
Your outside life keeps running.
This is outpatient care. You go home at the end of the day, and the schedule is built around your work and family rather than the reverse.
Nothing is permanent.
If the level of care is wrong, we move you. Starting in partial hospitalization and stepping down to intensive outpatient is normal, not a setback.
Care at Compass runs on one coordinated plan rather than several disconnected ones. Four stages, and you are never guessing which one you are in.
01
Speak with our Orange County team, walk through your history, and confirm which level of care fits. We verify your benefits and explain exactly what you will pay before you commit to anything. No charge, no obligation, and everything you share stays private.
02
Randall Smith, LMFT and the clinical team build one plan across therapy, medical insight, nervous system work, and practical life planning. We look at what is happening in your mind, your body, and your relationships, not only the symptom that brought you in. If time away from daily pressures would help, we discuss accommodation at this stage.
03
Partial hospitalization gives you a fuller weekly schedule and closer clinical monitoring, which suits people who need real structure early on. Intensive outpatient runs lighter so you can hold down work and family commitments. Many clients begin in one and move to the other as they stabilize, keeping the same team and the same plan throughout.
04
Support continues after programming through relapse prevention, community events, and ongoing personal care. Our alumni community now spans California and Colorado, so the people you meet here stay with you.
Most people who come to us have tried something already. Talk therapy that never went deep enough, medication that flattened everything, or years of holding it together in public. We work with what is actually happening underneath.
Persistent low mood, loss of interest, exhaustion that sleep does not fix. We treat depression as a whole body condition, looking at physiology, sleep, and relationships alongside therapy rather than treating mood in isolation.
A nervous system stuck in a state it cannot come down from. Alongside therapy we use nervous system regulation work, so you learn to bring your own body back to baseline instead of depending on a coping strategy that eventually runs out.
For many of the people we serve, particularly veterans and first responders, the difficulty is not remembering what happened. It is living inside a body that never stood down afterward. We work at a pace you set, and you are never pushed to tell a story before you are ready.
When a mental health condition and a substance use issue occur together, treating one and ignoring the other rarely holds. Our clinical team works with both inside a single plan. Where someone needs medical detox or residential care first, we say so plainly and help coordinate it before programming begins.
Most people arrive braced for something clinical and impersonal. Here is what the first week actually looks like, so nothing about it is a surprise.
One plan, not several.
Therapy, medical insight, nervous system work, and practical life planning sit inside the same coordinated plan. You are not the person carrying information between three providers who never speak.
A team that knows your name.
You work with the same faces from your first call onward, not a rotating cast. That continuity is a clinical choice, not a staffing accident.
Built for people who carry the most.
First responders, veterans, executives, and anyone who looks steady in public while struggling underneath. We accept Tricare in California and sit a short drive from Camp Pendleton.
Optional spiritual support, never required.
For clients who want their faith to be part of recovery, it is welcome and integrated. For clients who do not, it is simply never raised. Both are entirely normal here and neither changes the clinical care you receive.
A setting that helps.
Our office sits minutes from the coast in one of the more restorative corners of Southern California, with ocean view accommodation available for program participants who want it.
Some people need distance from their daily life before anything else can shift. For clients who want that, Compass offers executive accommodation in one of the more serene settings in the country, with ocean views, a pool, and gardens, a short drive from our San Clemente office.
It is a private residence rather than a treatment facility. All clinical care is delivered at our licensed program location in San Clemente. Accommodation is optional, arranged separately, and billed separately from clinical services. For the privacy of the people staying there, we do not publish the address.
Randall is a licensed marriage and family therapist who has practiced for more than 20 years, with over 35 years in the pastoral and counseling field. He works with individuals, couples, families, children, and adolescents, and his experience spans anxiety, depression, anger, family conflict, dual diagnosis, addiction, parenting, and relationship counseling. Randall holds a B.A. in Religious Studies with a minor in Psychology and an M.A. in Psychology. He believes deeply in helping people discover their true identity and move toward wholeness, and in giving individuals and families practical ways to meet life more positively and more meaningfully.
Charlie provides guidance and support to individuals seeking healing, hope, and personal growth. He believes recovery means caring for the whole person, mind, body, and spirit, and he creates a safe, respectful environment where clients can explore meaning, purpose, forgiveness, and resilience as part of their recovery. Charlie has led large nonprofit movements across Southern California and has spent the last 14 years working to widen a narrow approach to mental health, and seeing real change in the people he serves. Working alongside the clinical team, he encourages each person to draw on their own values and beliefs to build a stronger foundation for lasting wellness. His approach is inclusive and centered on the client, honoring each person’s spiritual background while building connection, inner peace, and hope for the future.
Cierra brings years of experience in mental health, case management, insurance coordination, and group facilitation. She leads therapeutic groups, manages clinical operations, and helps clients reach the resources they need, making sure every person receives compassionate, high quality care. Her attention to detail and her leadership let her bridge the gap between treatment and lasting recovery. Above all, Cierra believes in the power of hope, connection, and transformation, and she is committed to helping people build healthier, more fulfilling lives.
Amber Gail oversees day to day operations and is dedicated to creating a safe, supportive, and welcoming environment for every client who comes through our doors. She works closely with the team to make sure each person receives compassionate, high quality care, and she is known for her kindness, her attention to detail, and her nurturing spirit. Amber goes out of her way to help clients feel comfortable, supported, and valued throughout their healing journey, and her commitment to a positive atmosphere helps create a space where people can focus on growth, recovery, and lasting change.
We accept Tricare in California. For every other carrier we work with your out of network benefits, which for many plans still covers a meaningful share of partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient care. We also offer cash pay options for clients who would rather keep insurance out of it entirely.
Before you start, our team verifies your coverage, calculates what you would actually pay, and puts it in writing. No estimates that quietly change later, and no charge for the verification itself.

Partial hospitalization gives you a fuller weekly schedule and closer clinical monitoring. Intensive outpatient runs lighter so you can keep working. Many clients start in one and move to the other as they stabilize.
Both are outpatient, meaning you go home at the end of the day. Partial hospitalization is the more intensive of the two, with more hours each week and closer monitoring, and it suits people who need real structure early on. Intensive outpatient is lighter and built to fit around work and family. Which one you start in comes out of your initial assessment, and it is not a permanent decision.
Yes, as part of dual diagnosis care. When a mental health condition and a substance use issue occur together, our clinical team works with both inside one plan rather than treating them as separate problems. If someone needs medical detox or residential care before outpatient programming, we will tell you plainly and help coordinate it.
We accept Tricare in California. For other carriers we work with your out of network benefits, and we offer cash pay options. Our team verifies your coverage and puts what you would pay in writing before you start, at no cost.

No. Spiritual support is available to anyone who wants it and simply never raised with anyone who does not. Both are completely normal here, and it makes no difference to the clinical care you receive.
